OUR PURE GLYCERIN SOAPS--Our glycerin soaps are low-sudsing due to having no added detergents, preservatives, hardeners or other additives.
Glycerin is a natural softening & hydrating by-product of the soap making process (saponification). Manufacturers of soap usually remove the glycerin during saponification and sell it for use in luxurious moisturizing products. Then replace the glycerin by adding detergents and other additives, making the soap harsh & drying to your skin.
BUT HERE AT ELEMENT SOAPS we use 100% pure vegetable glycerin for our soaps. This makes them wonderfully gentle, hydrating & moisturizing for your skin!! Glycerin is an emollient (a soothing softening agent) and humectant that draws moisture from the air & holds it to your skin. This is why it is so wonderfully moisturizing!!! This also creates a protective barrier between your skin & any external irritant. We use all natural plant mica's for color and essential plant oils and fragrances. We add no detergents, stabilizers, hardeners or other additives.
PLEASE NOTE: Since glycerin dissolves easily in water we recommend the soap bars be kept in a soap dish or drying rack with good drainage. Otherwise your soap may turn into a gooey mess that will melt away easily.

OUR OLD FASHIONED DECORATIVE & KETTLE COOKED LYE SOAPS
The 1st soap products date back as early as 2800 B.C. The early colonial soap makers ingredients were mainly lye and lard. Colonial soap makers first had to create their ingredients. They would collect hardwood ashes from their cooking and heating fires, place them in a hopper and pour water over them. This leached the lye out of the ashes. The lye was then boiled until it reached suitable strength for soap making. They had to prepare their fats and oils as well. Leftover cooking fats and uncooked animal fats were collected and cleaned by boiling. This was done outside as the smell is said to have been horrific and lingering! The lye solution and cleaned fats were then put in a large cast iron kettle and boiled over open fire for hours until thick. Then the mixture was cooled and cut into bars for use. Usually a whole year's worth of soap was made at once.
Today, the modern soap making process still includes the use of lye, water and heat and if hand stirred, a generous amount of time. Extreme caution must still be used when making the lye/water solution necessary for saponification. The lye/water mix is still added to the heated oils/lard when they have reached the appropriate temperature. And the mix is still cooked until desired thickness is reached before adding colors and/or fragrance. Then poured into prepared molds and allowed to cool and cure before being cut into bars for use. However, this process has been greatly simplified due to supplies being readily available in stores and on the internet. Although we no longer have to make our own lye, it has become increasing difficult to find and more costly due to it's use in the making of illegal methamphetamine's. Modern conveniences such as electricity and indoor plumbing make soap making easier than in colonial days but results in the same wonderful clean, natural soap product.
